The Harmonica Exercise for Lung Program, HELP, uses the Medical Harmonica, invented by John Schaman, M.D., and made for him by Seydel, the oldest harmonica factory in the world. The original research targeted the excessive ageing process of the lungs, where a loss of 50% of lung function, between the ages of 30 and 70, is normal. To reduce this ageing effect, Dr. Schaman looked at many options, eventually choosing harmonica playing, as harmonicas are the only instruments in the world to make music with inhaling. Most commonly, harmonica playing involves single note melody playing, which is difficult for beginners and provides less lung challenge than multiple note, chordal playing. The normal 10 hole diatonic harmonica plays 2 chords, an exhale chord and an inhale chord. The Medical Harmonica plays 8 chords. Chordal playing with the Medical Harmonica gives a much better challenge to the breathing muscles, is considerably easier to play, all the while providing excellent musicality!
Tribute to Dr. Terry Kavanagh, the Pioneer in Cardiac Rehabilitation
In this video of 2020, I pay tribute to Dr. Terry Kavanagh, the Canadian and international pioneer in the field of Cardiac Rehabilitation, who passed away in 2018. His insight and dedicated effort on behalf of heart patients of every kind, has had a most significant impact on literally millions of heart patients all over the world! For me personally, his impact on my life is unfathomable. As a young medical graduate with a residency in cardiology, about to commence, I attended, by chance, an international symposium Dr. Kavanagh hosted a 1976 entitled “A Symposium in Cardiac Rehabilitation.“ At that time, exercise for heart patients was labelled as “malpractice“ by many. I was so excited by the results of this new field of practice that I met with Dr. Kavanagh to inquire about the possibility of me entering this line of work. He offered me a position as his clinical fellow, a position previously set up by the University of Toronto. No one before, nor since, had taken advantage of this exceptional opportunity.

I've been listening to your harmonica.... I played the Centenario harp for many years and it's very heavy lung exercise since the reeds have no breath savers... Thar harp is an old timer from Hohner.... Your harp sounds very melodious and easier to play... Ibegan to play at the age of 8 and I'm 75 with a great lung resistance... Thanks for your video... Even during the GDR period (i.e. former communist East Germany), Seydel (based in Klingenthal, Saxony) managed to make excellent instruments, despite material shortages etc. - and their current offerings are amazing! I (like Stevie) have been playing Hohner Chromonicas for decades, but I also own a few GDR-era Seydel "Bandmaster" chromatics (among them my only chromatic in Bb), and I absolutely love them!

Nice. The first piece is refreshing. Inventive. Lacking any cliche. Jason's vocals are getting better. Scratch My Back is a nice nod to to the mater blues man. If someone you know never heard of Jason Ricci and wants to learn more play them this clip!
Chromatic harmonica is such a cool instrument. It's like having a pocket piano in some way
Very melodic but I've never really liked his songs much. I never understood how "the Blues Travelers" ever thought they were a blues group.
